NOID NEWS
We are entering a new decade and one key issue will remain the identity question. As before, we strongly believe this is something the individual should be free to create. This is the core of why we promote the arts.
The long winter break has given us time to re-adjust our policies for both the newsletter, and the gallery.
The mailout which has started three years ago as a list informing you about events of NO:ID gallery has quickly evolved and expanded into an e-listing promoting underground events of visual and performance art, live music, theatre, films, and talks. So far so good.
In the future, we will have three sections on each mailout. The first features just call-outs for submissions and co-operations. The second, and that is new, will be reviews of events. And the third will still be listings.
For all three, we work with you. There is a neat form sheet on the noidgallery.net that you can use. Or, if you have something more personal to say, you may just hit the reply button: yes, we read it all, and reply to most.
Now the gallery space. Please raise your hands in applause for Steve Mallaghan who has been curating the first six months a show a week. Thanks also to all the amazing artists who are with us. The last year was a great success, if not to say a breakthrough.
In the future, we will still be curating in the old location, but also in other locations that appear adequate. Rather than thinking from a space to be filled, we will focus on our core gallery artists and new partners, setting up high quality exhibitions with all the preparation and promotion involved.
Further, we are happy to announce that we will have a group show in Hamburg.
Please understand that NO:ID gallery is a network, and you are a part of it. Send us all your ideas, plans, events, reviews, comments; the closer we cooperate, the further we will go.
NOID theft
ID theft is an old issue (see here). As you know, we have been using the label NO:ID for quite a while - first as name of the screen printing workshop / collective from 2005, then as name of the exhibiting artists collective from 2006 in various locations, leading to the present day NOID gallery as it is.
The picture below shows the first exhibition we have had in the gallery in June 2008 by Janmaat:
Now, a person we don't wish to label has applied to register NO:ID as a trademark for garments in his name. This has nothing to do with us and we are proceeding to oppose this his application. He has only been doing this to prey on our success. So this is a case of NO:ID theft! Click here to see his application to the Intellectual Property Register. Now what shall one think of this? The world is full of crooks!
Now compare Steve Mallaghan's show in the same venue after the news broke:
So here we see how a picture gets nicked! Oh and yes, that's again not the only case. Our dear friend and supporter Pietro from Peoti for President - a wicked band! Has sent us this video, where you can also see NO:ID being nicked, this time in Barcelona:

NO:ID will continue to do what we're doing - that is, demonstrating through creativity that identity is something each of us has the right to create of himself, rather than having it administered. We are fighting against identity being stolen just as much as we fight against it being administered.
NOID party
Yes, we're having a party! Well done everybody! This is the occasion to say hello and goodbye, and try to raise a couple of coppers for starving artists, the law suit against the crook, and the move!
Come celebrate NOID madness with this most amazing line-up of weired and wonderful bands:
I mean, wait a minute, seriously, that's a dream line-up! Space is limited so it may be wise to come early. But hey, on the other hand, we've been keeping fairly quiet about this one to avoid disappointment - please come down we will be an amazing exquisite crowd, as usual!
Venue address: The Castle, 44 Commercial Road, E1 1LN3. Live music starts 9pm and finishes at 2am, while the place has a 24h license and the party will swing until 4am / 5am easily. We have DJ prima volta on the turntables upstairs, while downstairs will be rocked by Bangerang! playing ska, jungle and drum'n'bass with DJ's Ben Kei, Ricky Force and guests.
Entrance will be £7 at the door, email us for £5 guest list.
NOID move
And here is some good news: NO:ID gallery is moving to new premises in the new year. We're very busy knocking everything together believe us! Here is what you can expect:
- A larger and more secure exhibition space
- Facilities to sell originals and prints
- Office and agency being accessible to the public
- A neat lounge area with WiFi, coffee and snacks
- A garden area for you and your fags you smoking artists
- All that in a central location
With other words, the new space will give us the possibilty to step up everything, become more professional and have a larger and more comfortable space to network. Exhibitions will run for longer, and we will be able to stock artwork and prints for extended periods and achieve more sales and commissions. The place can be used as a hub for all ye folk from the creative sector, and will make it easier to hook up.
The old premises in 31 Commercial Road next to Cafe Fresh have been a great success as they gave us a great deal of inspiration and the opportunity to continue as an arts collective. Special thanks at this point to the team of KKB finance and Cafe Fresh for having had us there.
Oh, and yes, we ARE currently looking for peeps to get involved. So if you can imagine yourself committing to this challange and opportunity, please contact us.
That's all for now - watch this space for more.
